Indications
  • Post-operative to assess urinary outputperfusion.
  • Prostatic obstruction:
    • BPH [most likely].
    • CA of prostate.
  • Other obstructions:
    • Clots.
    • Stones.
    • Bladder CA.
  • Trauma.
  • Paralysis.
Types
  • Regular latex or simplastic: cheapuse for most things.
  • Silastic [clear silicone]: for long termsince less infectionbut moreexpensive.
  • Teeman: tapered tip for easier insertion around prostate.
  • Coudé: angled for easier insertion around prostate.
Sizes
  • 12 to 24 for adults.
  • 12 is smallest24is largest.
  • 12-16 usually rangebig ones used for clots.
Locations
  • Per uerethram: 
    • Location: up urethra.
    • Indication: most cases.
    • Contraindications: acute prostatitisinjured urethra.
  • Suprapubic:
    •  Location: superior to pubic symphysis.
Complications
  • Infection.
  • Trauma on insertion.
  • Confused pt rips it outcausing trauma.
  • Bladder spasm.
